Power Transmission and Fluid Power - Intelligent, Networked and Communicative into the Future

The power transmission and fluid power industries are expecting growth of around 3 percent in 2019. The industry focusing on industry 4.0 solutions at the Hannover Messe. The World trade share on the rise.




Power Transmission and Fluid Power are important key industries in mechanical engineering industry. With intelligent products and system solutions, they make a decisive contribution to the global competitiveness of their customers. With a total sales volume of more than 26 billion euros, German power transmission with 18.2 billion euros and fluidpower with 8.2 billion euros together make up the largest sector segment within the German mechanical engineering industry. The high level of employment in both sectors, totalling around 130,000 employees, was maintained.
The World Trade Share of Power Transmission
While the world trade share of power transmission in 2016 was still 20.5 percent, it would be 21.3 percent in 2017. In fluidpower, the world trade share rose from 23.7 percent for 2016 to 23.9 percent for 2017. Both industries were thus able to further expand their leading position in world trade despite the global uncertainties.

World Trade Share Increases
While the world trade share of Power Transmission Engineering was still 20.5 percent in 2016, it was 21.3 percent in 2017. In Fluid Power, the world trade share rose from 23.7 percent for 2016 to 23.9 percent for 2017. Both industries were thus able to further expand their leading position in world trade despite the global uncertainties.

Growth for 2018 and 2019
Power Transmission Engineering exceeded the 4 percent growth forecast for 2018 with an actual increase in sales to 6 percent. Fluid Power grew by a total of 7 percent in 2018. Despite continuing uncertainties (Brexit, international trade conflicts, etc.), both industries are cautiously optimistic about 2019 and expect growth of around 3 percent each.

Challenges and Opportunities - Technological Trends
The entire mechanical engineering sector, power transmission and fluid technology are also facing profound and rapid change, driven by trends such as digitisation, electrification, autonomisation and decarbonisation. "These long-term change processes will change power transmission in the long term and open up new business models and opportunities for the industry - not only in the field of mobile applications. We will see solutions at the upcoming IAMD on the occasion of the Hannover Messe 2019. Especially in the service sector, autonomous solutions will lead to increased efficiency. With its technological and manufacturing expertise, German power transmission technology has an excellent starting position," says Wilhelm Rehm, Chairman of the VDMA Power Transmission Engineering Association and member of the Board of Management of ZF Friedrichshafen AG.

Pneumatic and hydraulic components and system solutions in fluidpower are also core components of stationary and mobile mechanical engineering. "For industrial 4.0 applications and processes, intelligent fluid power components and systems are important enablers for smart and efficient production processes, networked services and new business models such as predictive maintenance," says Christian H. Kienzle, Chairman of the VDMA Fluidpower Association and CEO of ARGO-HYTOS GmbH. "For our industry, the digital dimension and the associated shorter innovation cycles are an important reason for our annual participation at the Hannover Messe.

OPC UA - a Language for Intelligent Production
As a leading market and thus also as a leading supplier for industry 4.0, German mechanical engineering is the decisive key industry of a networked production world.
The suppliers of power transmission and fluidpower supply decisive performance modules and industrial 4.0 components for industrial intelligence. Power, torque and intelligence become the triad of "made in Germany", says Hartmut Rauen, Managing Director of the Power Transmission Engineering and Fluid Power Associations and Deputy Executive Director of the VDMA.
"German industry can further expand its leading role in the field of intelligent production and thus the competitiveness of Germany as a business location by using interoperable, open and standardized machine-to-machine communication along the entire value chain. By developing a standardized world language of production - such as the VDMA is pursuing with OPC UA - the entire German industry will gain a decisive advantage in terms of time and competition worldwide," continues Rauen. "Semantic interoperability
is the key for industry 4.0. The standard OPC UA (Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture) helps manufacturers to prepare their products for intelligent industry 4.0 applications. For this purpose, Antriebstechnik is creating an OPC UA information model (Companion Specification) for the powertrain. In order to achieve compatibility with different systems and OPC UA, eCl@ss and ISO classify fluid power products with their characteristics and standardize them with uniform semantics. The characteristics serve as a basis for OPC UA specifications. The standardized description of the components and systems in power transmission and fluidpower enables compatibility at all levels of industrial automation. OPC UA is thus an essential building block for new industry 4.0 business models.

The intention of the special exhibition is to use exhibits from well-known manufacturers to demonstrate to visitors that intelligent solutions in the sense of digitisation, networking and communication can be realised through the consistent further development of existing systems. The exhibits shown follow the philosophy "designed and developed for the largest customer benefit".

Future Trends and Innovations: The VDMA Motion & Drives Forum
True to the motto "Integrated Industry - Industrial Intelligence", the VDMA Motion & Drives Forum (Hall 23, Booth B20) will also be holding exciting lectures on the most important innovation topics of the industry at the Hannover Messe 2019 as part of the VDMA Motion & Drives Forum. The focus is on predictive maintenance, intelligent power transmission and fluidpower, future business, smart manufacturing and OPC UA.

Partner Country of the Hannover Messe: Sweden
Sweden is on course for growth. The gross domestic product (GDP) of the Scandinavians rose by 2.4 percent in 2017. The export volume of German power transmission and fluidpower to Sweden was around 600 million euros (2016: 541 million euros), imports were around 130 million euros (2016: 122 million euros).
